People occassionally ask me why I opened Atlas Fit, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to share why. I opened my gym with one simple mission: to bring a different taste of fitness to the Tallahassee community. I got my start in fitness when I got a job at Gold’s Gym in Tallahassee back in 2008. Eventually I moved my way up to personal trainer and got my first taste of being able to help people achieve their goals through fitness. Fast forward to 2011 and this was the first time I did an obastacle course race called Tough Mudder.
Before Atlas Fit existed, I got deep into obstacle course racing—Tough Mudder, Spartan Race, Warrior Dash, you name it. The more races I did, the more I realized something was missing here in Tallahassee. There wasn’t a place designed to help people train specifically for those gritty, full-body, functional challenges. There were no gyms at the time where you could practice climbing a wall, working with monkey bars, or building the kind of strength and conditioning those events demand. This started the idea of Atlas and was probably the biggest motivation for why I opened my gym.
So when I launched our first location, I set out to change that.
I invested in equipment that pushed beyond the traditional gym setup. We built a space where functional training, obstacle prep, and strength work lived under one roof. And then we took it a step further—we built an outdoor obstacle course right on site. Real walls to climb. Real monkey bars to traverse. Real-world challenges you can’t replicate on a machine.
At the time, nothing like that existed in Tallahassee. But I believed our community deserved it. I wanted people to experience fitness in a way that was fun, challenging, and different from what every other gym was offering.
Atlas Fit started with that vision, and it continues to guide everything we do today. We have continued to evolve in the 10+ years we’ve been around, but we still keep that same passion for fitness variety in everything we do.
